Moonlight shone down upon the lone ship, sitting still in the sleeping waters. The night played a lullaby of silence for those who were awake to listen to its serenity. The midnight concerto came to an end when a single male voice began to sing.

“Upon one summer’s morning, I carefully did stray down by the Walls of Wapping, where I met a sailor gay, conversing with a young lass, who seemed to be in pain; saying, ‘William, when you go- I fear you’ll ne’er return again.’ My heart is pierced by Cupid, I disdain all glittering gold. There is nothing can console me, but my jolly sailor bold.” The low tenor voice of Captain Arthur Kirkland sounded, the notes laced with nostalgia. His jewel-toned eyes seemed to reflect the mist in his mind that surfaced from a previous night.

It was about a year ago this night, did the auricomous pirate meet a being of legend; a man of the sea, a merman to be precise. Legends told of these creatures’ beauty, and the legends could have never been anymore right. A face chiseled to perfection with eyes to mirror the deep sapphire color of the ocean. Waves of golden locks kissed the male’s strong shoulders, complementing the visible upper body that glistened under the light. Even so the Captain could not see the man’s lower body; he knew that the sight before him was that of a merman. What else could he be? He suddenly appeared with his arms propped on his long boat!

This encounter should have been the end for Arthur, but, he got away safely. Scallywags everywhere still wonder why the merman spared him. All sailors knew that your life was over at the end of the song of a mermaid, or in this case, a merman; but for the Captain of the notorious Union Jack- he was left with only a kiss and a promise to meet again.

So the Captain returned to the same place they met and sang. Only halfway through the song did the man stop. He was about to return to his quarters defeated when a familiar voice continued the unfinished song.

“My name it is Maria, a merchant's daughter fair. And I have left my parents and three thousand pounds a year. Come all you pretty fair maids, whoever you may be; who love a jolly sailor that plows the raging sea. While up aloft in storm, from me his absence mourn; and firmly pray arrive the day, he's never more to roam. My heart is pierced by Cupid, I disdain all glittering gold. There is nothing can console me, but my jolly sailor bold.”

Arthur had turned to find the source of the song standing twenty paces from him on the deck of his ship. The figure was recognizable, and naked- which shouldn't have bothered the fine captain but made him blush anyway. It was indeed his merman; though this time he had legs. The enchanting creature had a smug grin on his face as he sang, no doubt reveling in the other’s reactions to his arrival and state of dress. Slowly, he came closer, reaching the pirate only as he breathed the last, resonating note of the melody.

The two bodies were only so far apart. Only a thin wall of oxygen separated the men. Their eyes of water and green land never breaking contact with each other. One had all the questions, the other had all the answers; but with a single, heated kiss, they both forgot what they had in mind. Conversation could wait; their nearly insatiable lust could not.

His heart was pierced by Cupid and he disdained all glittering gold. There was nothing that could console him but his jolly sailor bold.
